Polarization phenomena upon stepwise excitation

Although polarization-signal vanishing and the formation of “dark states” is impossible upon stepwise excitation of levels with angular momentum j = 1, it is shown that the dependence of the polarization signal on time permits one to assess the character of coherence between lower levels.
