Analysis-Synthesis of Glottal Excitation

Methods described in a previous paper [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 37, 1186(A) (1965)] were used to determine the time-dependent glottal volume velocity and external pressure waveform for a speaker phonating /a/. By comparing these two quantities. it was possible to determine the approximate time dependence of the first three formants of the vocal tract. The glottal volume velocity was applied to the input of a variable POVO having appropriate time-dependent formants and the output was compared with the pressure waveform. “Standard” triangular waveforms and “standard” waveforms in which the relative phases of the harmonics had been modified were also used to excite the POVO. Psychoacoustic evaluations were made of the natural quality of the various synthesized outputs.
