Comments on “Experimental Study of the Vibrations of Solid, Isotropic, Elastic Cylinders,” by G. W. McMahon

In a recent paper, G. W. McMahon [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 36, 85 92 (1963)] presented an “Experimental Study of the Vibrations of Solid, Isotropic, Elastic Cylinders.” The cylindrical samples of aluminium and steel had 3 and 4 in. diameters. The aluminium samples ranged in height to-radius ratios from 0.201 to 3.29, while those of steel ranged from 0.205 to 2.48. One of the found vibration modes had been observed at circular disks of the alloy Ni-Span C with only a diameter of 0.35 in., height of 0.0727 in. (height/radius = 0.415) in the frequency range of 140 kc/sec.
