A new laboratory experiment for transformer modeling in the presence of harmonic distortion using a computer controlled harmonic generator

Zusammenfassung:The authors describe the introduction of power-system harmonics in the power engineering curriculum by investigating the variation of the transformer parameters and the mutual coupling between the windings as a function of frequency by a laboratory experiment. This test is based on a hybrid set of measurements on a single-phase and a three-phase transformer. The test procedure and comparison of the results with the available studies are shown. It is concluded that studying actual recorded data, simulating the distorted waveform in a laboratory experiment, and obtaining the results represent a good experience for the students who choose the power area as their careers. This experiment gave the students a better understanding of the impact of harmonics and distortion in power system analysis and modeling.< >
