Zusammenfassung:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in performance management processes and make recommendations for practice. Design/methodology/approach The paper reviews historical issues and developments in performance management processes, with particular attention paid to the challenges involved in ensuring effective performance management. Findings The paper finds that many of the recent headlines declaring the end of performance management and at best premature and at worst misleading. Recent developments in practice are described and reviewed, and recommendations on which of the developments are worth for organizations to pursue are made based on current research. Originality/value There are many headlines and a fair bit of hype around performance management recently. This paper reveals the issues and research behind the hype.
