The Effect of Rotation of an Epidural Needle: An In Vitro Study

It has been suggested that rotation of the epidural needle within the epidural space may increase the risk of durai puncture. Zusammenfassung:It has been suggested that rotation of the epidural needle within the epidural space may increase the risk of durai puncture. To assess this concept, sections of thoracolumbar dural sac were obtained from 3 adult spines at autopsy. Strips of sac were mounted on a stage in Ringerʼs lactate solution with a Tuohy needle supported vertically over them. Weights were added to the needle to determine the force required to produce durai puncture without and then with various degrees of needle rotation.
