Comparison between Skin Prick Test and Specific IgE in Diagnosis of House Dust Mite Sensitization in Respiratory Allergy of Seniors

Abstract Background Respiratory allergies, including asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, and allergic rhinitis, represent prevalent global health concerns with significant implications for public health and economic burdens. Aim of the Work The aim of this study is to evaluate which tool is best in diagnosis of respiratory allergy caused by house dust mites in seniors, skin prick test versus specific IgE. Patients and Methods A total of 60 patients with respiratory allergic diseases were enrolled in a year-long study conducted at Ain Shams University hospitals. Patients were categorized into two groups: 30 seniors (aged ≥ 60 years) and 30 young individuals (aged 15-30 years), with sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic tools compared between the groups. Conclusion In conclusion, this study suggests that specific IgE may be more accurate than the skin prick test for diagnosing house dust mite allergy in seniors. Further research with a larger sample size and consideration of various allergens is recommended. This study is the first of its kind to compare specific IgE and the skin prick test in elderly individuals.
