Effects of acidic growth conditions on spore germination and reproductive development in Dryopteris marginalis (L.)

Zusammenfassung: | Spores of Dryopteris marginalis were germinated on a defined nutrient medium at varying pH levels (3.2–8.2). Spore germination in all treatments ranged from 65.5 to 75.0 per cent and the effect of pH on germination is concluded to be minimal. Normal gametophyte development, as determined by the number of cells produced and the pattern of development, is strongly affected by the pH of the medium and developmental abnormalities were observed below pH 5.8. The usefulness of the system as a biological indicator for acidic precipitation is discussed. |
