Gamma rays from dark clouds

We present a comparison between the distribution of dark clouds and the COS-B γ-ray observations of the local interstellar medium at intermediate galactic latitudes $({10}^{\circ } \lt | b | \lt {25}^{\circ })$. The dark cloud catalogue of Lynds is combined with the complementary work of Feitzinger & Stüwe to obtain a uniform coverage of the medium-latitude sky. A good correlation between the expected and observed γ-ray intensities is found. In the general direction of the inner Galaxy, however, the observed intensities are higher than expected. This confirms previous findings.
