Monitoring of Inorganic and Organic Cations Using On-Line Ion Chromatography

On-line ion chromatography provides an effective, reliable, and accurate analytical method for the continuous monitoring of inorganic monovalent cations and morpholine in power-plant water. The determination of inorganic divalent cations and cyclohexylamine in water is also demonstrated. Using a higher capacity analytical column than was previously available with a high-capacity dynamic suppressor permits the use of stronger eluants. This combination shortens analysis times, improves sensitivity by improving peak shape, and generally provides wider dynamic ranges for analyses. The addition of boric acid to the eluant to increase sensitivity for weak base solutes is demonstrated and the mechanism is discussed.
