Zusammenfassung:The paper examines the question of professionalism in health and safety at work. The advantages of professionalism are discussed using theoretical evidence and the results of a small survey. The obstacles to the development of a profession are examined, together with the question of occupational control. Some suggestions are made for overcoming the difficulties. The paper advocates progress towards mediative control of occupational health and safety by use of statute.
