Alkyl Carbonato Terminally Substituted Anils

Several types of p,ṕ-disubstituted anils containing an alkyl carbonato terminal substituent have been prepared. Numerous examples of these generally unknown anils, in which, X in Formula I is alkyl carbonato and Y is alkoxy, acyloxy, alkyl keto, or alkyl carbonato, or with X and Y interchanged, have been synthesized. Many are characterized by relatively low mesomorphic transition temperatures and intermediate mesomorphic temperature ranges. The preparative methods for the individual classes of anils and tabulation of their mesomorphic temperature ranges are included along with a comparison of these data with corresponding data for anils not containing an alkyl carbonato terminal substituent.
