Zusammenfassung: | The paper begins by presenting 10 reasons for the enduring Greek-Turkish rivalry and indicates that all of them can be overcome (and at times have been overcome). Yet they retain their salience, with no resolution of the outstanding Greek-Turkish differences in sight in spite of extensive bilateral talks. The thrust of the paper is that the non-resolution of the Greek-Turkish conflict is less due to the incompatibility of tangible interests and above all the result of their chosen national identities cum historical narratives: their collective identities which are built on slighting and demonizing the 'Other' and concomitant national historical narratives, both of which are presented in detail. The article concludes with 'what is to be done' by, inter alia, using Alexander Wendt's approach of critical thinking and attitude change. |
