Zusammenfassung:This paper is an attempt to discuss current and future ESL practice with reference to a postal questionnaire survey administered to all English local education authorities in February 1989. The first part of the discussion deals with ESL practice in its historical context. The second part reports some of the findings of the survey. The final part proposes a particular view on future development in terms of collaborative mainstream ESL pedagogy.
