Preparation of Dehydroabietic Acid and "Dihydroabietic Lactone" by Disproportionation of Tall Oil Rosin with Trifluoroacetic Acid

Dehydroabietic acid 2 and "dihydroabietic lactone" 3 together with an oily mixture of three saturated lactones 4 epimeric with 3 were obtained when Tall Oil diene resin acids (e.g. abietic acid) were disproportionated with trifluoroacetic acid.
