Aqueous Polymerization of Acrylamide Initiated by Ce(lV)-Thioglycolic Acid Redox System

The aqueous polymerization of acrylamide initiated by the redox system Ce(1V)-thioglycolic acid has been studied at 35 ± 0.2°C. The pH measurement shows that a 1:1 metal:ligand complex is formed between Ce(IV) and thioglycolic acid (TGA). The rate of polymerization is given by R P =K[M]1.08[Ce 4+ ]...

Zusammenfassung:The aqueous polymerization of acrylamide initiated by the redox system Ce(1V)-thioglycolic acid has been studied at 35 ± 0.2°C. The pH measurement shows that a 1:1 metal:ligand complex is formed between Ce(IV) and thioglycolic acid (TGA). The rate of polymerization is given by R P =K[M]1.08[Ce 4+ ] 0.65 [TGA]° The overall energy of activation has been found to be 4.56 kcal/ deg/mol (19.06 kJ/mol). The number-average molecular weight ( M n ) of the polymer is directly proportional to the rate of polymerization. The M n of the polymer decreases with increasing concentration of both Ce 4+ and DMF.
