Zusammenfassung:The formation of diatomic molecular ions from atomic ions in the presence of their parent atoms can take place by a three-body association reaction that involves resonant charge transfer. An approximate rate constant for this process can be formulated simply, and calculated rates are in good agreement with experimental data. This mechanism should be an important loss process for ions moving rapidly in a low-temperature gas.
