(Medicine): A 41-year-old woman with a history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was admitted to the hospital because of malaise and chest and abdominal pain.
The patient had been well until approximately 2 weeks before presentation, when fatigue and malaise gradually developed. One week before presentation, she was seen in the outpatient clinic at this hospital for routine HIV follow-up. She reported having had unprotected intercourse with a new HIV-positive male partner 1 month earlier and was concerned about sexually transmitted diseases. Physical examination was normal.
