Transient Diabetes Insipidus during (and after) Pregnancy

To the Editor: The report by Iwasaki et al. (Feb. 21 issue) 1 of aggravation of diabetes insipidus during pregnancy extends our knowledge of this phenomenon, 2 3 4 5 6 7 confirming that it may be either responsive or resistant to vasopressin. We wish to describe a patient in whom transient vasopressin-resistant diabetes insipidus developed after delivery. A 26-year-old Japanese woman who was eight months post partum and still breast-feeding her baby presented to our hospital with polydipsia and polyuria that had developed abruptly three days earlier, when her first postpartum menstrual bleeding began.
