Recently, a claim was made that two patients with AIDS had responded to cyclosporine therapy. This claim was based on the observation that T4-positive cells (helper cells) in these two patients had increased markedly after eight days of treatment.
We have conducted serial monitoring of acute counts of lymphocytes and T-cell subsets, using monoclonal antibodies and a fluorescence-activated cell sorter, among our renal-allograft recipients treated with cyclosporine since December 1983. In Table 1 we list the results and comparisons of cell counts in normal controls who received no drug therapy; cyclosporine-treated allograft recipients who had stable and adequate renal . . .
