We wish to report an example of a high level of physical rehabilitation attained by a patient with a heart transplant.
A 48-year-old man received an orthotopic heart transplant in August 1982. He had a two-year history of end-stage cardiac failure secondary to ischemic cardiomyopathy. The donor heart was obtained from a 34-year-old man who had died after a traffic accident.
The patient's previous physical activities had included tennis, skiing, and soccer. Postoperatively, a standard immunosuppressive regimen of cyclosporine and prednisone was used. Transient renal failure required short-term hemodialysis. The patient was discharged 1 1/2 months after . . .
