The Family’s Role in the Success on the Patients Speech Therapy

Introduction: The family was established as a fundamental base that accompanies the formation and development of every human being, with the place in which form the psychic structure and where the experience is characterized, first, by emotional patterns. Objectives: To verify, through a case attended at the speech therapy ambulatory for a large hospital in Porto Alegre, the improvement in the patient’s condition with family support in the treatment. Resumed Report: A 3.3-year-old boy, diagnosed with Down syndrome and global developmental delay was presented. Assisted by speech therapy ambulatory for 8 months, and their fortnightly visits by important state of feed refusal episodes succeeded episodes of coughing and choking. In evaluation, only this refusal and miofunctional observed changes were related to the clinical state of the patient as hypotonicity, lips posture at rest, and slightly parted teeth. We instructed the family to enter new flavors, textures, and follow a routine with meals, bringing this new feed experience to the patient. Conclusion: With family support and adherence to the proposed treatment, the patient had an excellent response to the stimuli and currently accepts all kinds of textures and flavors, without restriction. The episodes of coughing and choking were suppressed due to adequate oral and pharyngeal structures to new textures inserted in the diet. Practice patterns were statements applicable.
