Human Neurobrucellosis as a Cause of Deafness: Report of Two Cases

Introduction: Brucellosis is a zoonosis transmitted to humans mainly by ingestion of raw milk and its derivatives, caused by a gram negative cocobacillus genus Brucella. It is a systemic disease that may eventually invade the central nervous system, affecting the eighth cranial nerve, with reports of deafness as an early symptom. Objectives: This study report two cases of neurobrucellosis diagnosed and treated at the General Hospital of Goiânia (HGG) and both coming from Tocantins (TO). Resumed Report: A 35-year-old male patient (A. C. S.), married, cowboy, born in Maranhão, coming from TO complain hearing loss and ear pain, along with daily fever, headache, and paresthesia of the lower limbs. SMR, female, 43, single, teacher, born in Arapoema (TO), found in Colinas (TO), presented with leg weakness and ear pain. Conclusion: Based on the personal experiences of patients, both from the same region (TO), both with involvement of cranial nerve VIII, being anacusis is a common finding of the disease progression.
