Coccoliths as Late Quaternary Palaeoclimatic Indicators in the Subantarctic Pacific Ocean

CLIMATIC fluctuations during the Pleistocene have been revealed by isotope and palaeontological studies of deep-sea cores from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans 1–4 and the Pacific Ocean 4–6 . This article indicates the utility of two species of Coccolithophoridae as palaeoclimatic guides in high latitude areas. The eight deep-sea carbonate cores studied were collected from the National Science Research Vessel Eltanin in the South Pacific Ocean (Table 1).
