Zusammenfassung:IN the course of an investigation of the occurrence of Azotobacter and Beijerinckia in fifty soil samples from Nigeria, numerous other organisms appeared on the ‘nitrogen-free’ agar plates used for isolation. Among those appearing on alkaline medium were several strains of Bacillus . Bacillus strains have been observed growing on this medium previously by one of us (J. H. B.) while examining the occurrence of nitrogen-fixing organisms in tropical soils from widely separated locations on all continents 1 .
