Observation of Longitudinal Acoustic Mode in Poly(β-hydroxybutyrate)

A Raman active longitudinal acoustic mode (LAM) in the 15 cm-1 region has been observed in a biodegradable thermoplastic, poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). The inverse relationship between the long period measured by small-angle X-ray scattering and the band frequency was observed. In addition, the int...

Zusammenfassung:A Raman active longitudinal acoustic mode (LAM) in the 15 cm-1 region has been observed in a biodegradable thermoplastic, poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). The inverse relationship between the long period measured by small-angle X-ray scattering and the band frequency was observed. In addition, the intensity of this vibration was found to be extremely intense as is characteristic of longitudinal acoustic modes. This observation is especially intriguing since the chemical structure of PHB is significantly different from those of all known polymers exhibiting LAM bands.
