In order to commercialize a new active ingredient for application as an agricultural pest control chemical, a manufacturing process must be developed, the safety and efficacy of the new compound must be demonstrated, and the compound must be registered according to government regulations. The contributions of analytical chemistry to each of these steps are reviewed.
