Zusammenfassung:By using digital image correlation (DIC) technology and scanning electron microscope (SEM), this paper displays the deformation responses and failure characteristics of AA2024-T4 under tension, combined shear-tension, and shear loading conditions through Arcan device combined with butterfly specimen. In addition, the qualitative analysis about deformation modes and quantitative investigations on strain distribution of butterfly specimens are conducted. Findings suggest that the central area of butterfly specimen makes an outstanding contribution to the deformation responses and the deformation in this area can be regarded as uniform. In addition, an empirical relation between loading angle and strain path is proposed (γ=−1.07−1.70θ). The distribution of ductile and brittle features is found sensitives to the stress state, and the kind of brittle feaures exhibits increases with the introduced shear component. •The combination of qualitative and quantitative research ways was utilized.•An empirical relation between loading angle and strain path is proposed.•Failure mechanisms under different loading conditions are studied.
