Combatting food fraud IN SUB-SAHARAN Africa: Strategies for Strengthened safety and security

Food fraud is a significant challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) that threatens food safety and security. This article explores the types and effects of food fraud and the difficulties and potential controls to improve food safety and security in the region. The current state of the food safety and security landscape in SSA is discussed, highlighting the economic, political, cultural, and technological challenges faced. Various examples of food fraud practices in SSA are presented, underscoring the need for effective strategies to detect and mitigate fraud. The regulatory bodies in several SSA countries are examined, as they play a vital role in combating food fraud. Major challenges in controlling food fraud, including high production costs, weak regulatory systems, cultural practices, and technological limitations, are identified. Recommendations for strategies to detect and mitigate food fraud in SSA, such as food traceability analysis, food authenticity testing, vulnerability assessments, and the development of food fraud databases, are provided. Additionally, the importance of public-private sector collaboration in addressing food fraud is emphasized. Therefore, addressing food fraud in sub-Saharan Africa is vital for ensuring food safety and protecting public health.
