Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely researched as green solvents and have shown remarkable performance in organic synthesis, analytical purification, and electrochemistry. Studies have shown that the ecosystem can be severely damaged when ILs are released into the water environment, it is critical to use effective means to degrade ILs. Advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, and physical methods have been investigated to remove ILs over the years. The available review papers have not yet presented a comprehensive overview of removal methods for ILs. In this review, common ILs removal methods are systematically summarized and explained. Moreover, the related factors, reaction pathways, and reaction mechanism of each method for the removal of ILs are discussed. Finally, the outlook on the future of ILs degradation is presented. |
