Zusammenfassung:•Highly deformed microstructure and strong crystallographic texture were observed in the weld area.•The peak temperature of the weld was below β transus.•Material flow within the α phase was due to prism slip and mechanical twinning. This work was undertaken to provide a comprehensive insight into the microstructure produced during dissimilar linear friction welding of VT8M-1 and VT25U titanium alloys. Microstructural observations revealed a heavily deformed microstructure and an extremely strong crystallographic texture in the weld zone. It was concluded that the peak welding temperature was below β transus. Material flow in the α phase was mainly contributed by the prism slip, while that in the β phase was governed by the {112} slip.
