•Viscosity of the Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 was measured at various values of the concentration and pH of the dispersion medium.•Hydrosols are Newtonian liquids, the viscosity of which depends on the pH of the dispersion medium.•Under certain conditions appears electro-viscous and polyelectrolyte effects.
The viscosity of hydrosol particles consisting of a ceria-zirconia solid solution was measured at various concentrations and pH of the dispersion medium. It was established that, in the average concentration range of the dispersed phase, the hydrosols are Newtonian liquids and that the viscosity depends on the pH of the dispersion medium. Certain constrained conditions lead to electro-viscous effects that strongly affect the rheological properties. In the low concentration range, hydrosols display a polyelectrolyte effect, which is caused by the presence of an ionised hydrated gel layer on the surface of the particles. |
