Zusammenfassung:•Novel Framework Classification of Road Network performances (RNP) based on key features.•Classification of RNP according to the type of contribution.•Gaps in potential case studies for future research. The proper functioning of road networks is fundamental for an adequate development of daily socio-economic activities and for the sustainability of modern communities. Road network performance (RNP) has received increased attention from researchers and practitioners during the past three decades. The paper provides insights regarding common elements and possible overlapping among the definitions of eleven RNP concepts (connectivity, redundancy, accessibility, reliability, connectivity reliability, travel time reliability, capacity reliability, flexibility, robustness, vulnerability, and resilience). For doing so, the authors develop a classification scheme that maps possible relationships and boundaries between them. Finally, the paper gives a discussion and puts forward promising avenues of future research.
