Hydrogenation of CaCO3 to CH4 catalyzed by NiCO3

•CaCO3 can be hydrogenated to yield CH4 with high selectivity by doping with NiCO3.•NiCO3 doping lowers the temperature and H2 pressure for CaCO3 hydrogenation.•0.50% NiCO3 converts 99.0% CaCO3 to CH4 at a PH2 of 0.05 MPa and T > 640 K.•NiCO3 forms highly dispersed Ni at T
