, was studied using a suitable experimental setup. The reaction product was investigated by a variety of electron microscopy techniques including SEM, TEM and EBSD. Surface characterisation revealed islands of the reaction product and step like structure for the un-reacted Ti matrix, typical of thermal etching. The reaction product was identified as Y
