Discrimination of calcium against strontium in plants with a cryptating agent

The effects of cryptating agents are studied in $sup 45$CaCl$sub 2$- and $sup 90$SrCl$sub 2$-labelled seedlings of bush beans. The cryptating agent used was Kryptofix 222 (4, 7, 13, 16, 21, 24-Hexaoxa-1, 10, diazobicyclo-8, 8, 8- hexacosan). Kryptofix 222 induces a discrimination in favour of Ca aga...

Zusammenfassung:The effects of cryptating agents are studied in $sup 45$CaCl$sub 2$- and $sup 90$SrCl$sub 2$-labelled seedlings of bush beans. The cryptating agent used was Kryptofix 222 (4, 7, 13, 16, 21, 24-Hexaoxa-1, 10, diazobicyclo-8, 8, 8- hexacosan). Kryptofix 222 induces a discrimination in favour of Ca against Sr chelation. The Sr$sup 2+$ concentration in the substrate is thus reduced as well as Sr$sup 2+$ uptake as compared to Ca$sup 2+$ uptake. This is the indirect reason why Kryptofix 222 is able to increase the Ca/Sr ratio in plants. (GSE/AK)
