Spontaneous acceleration of slowly rotating helium II?A manifestation of a phase transition in the system of macroscopic quantum vortices

Experiments connected with the observation of metastable states of the vortex lattice in rotating helium II are discussed. It is shown that transitions between states with different numbers of vortices can be interpreted as a new type of quantum phase transition.
