α,β-unsaturated ketones. III. Copolymers of perfluoroalkyl propenyl ketones with dienes

The preparation and properties of copolymers of three perfluoroalkyl propenyl ketones with different 1,3‐dienes are described. Emulsion copolymerization at 50°C. and at 5°C. of perfluoromethyl, perfluoropropyl, and perfluoroheptyl propenyl ketones with 1,3‐dienes, such as butadiene, 1, 1,2‐trifluoro‐3‐chlorobutadiene, 1,1,2‐trifluorobutadiene, and isoprene, has been accomplished and many of the products have exhibited elastomeric properties. Attempted copolymerization of perfluoropropyl propenyl ketone with 1,1,2‐trifluoro‐3,4,4‐trichlorobutadiene or 1,1,2‐trifluoro‐3,4‐dichlorobutadiene did not yield any polymeric products at either 50°C. or at 5°C. Qualitative determinations of thermal stability and solvent resistance have been made for some of the ketone/diene copolymers for comparison with commercial cold GR‐S rubber.
