Zusammenfassung:Long chain halomethylalkyl ethers, ROCH2X (X=C1, Br), can be prepared, free of bischloromethyl ether (BCME), by reaction of a primary alkanol, e.g. 1‐octanol in halogenated hydrocarbons, with (CH2O)n and HX. In the reaction ROH , the structure of the alkanol and the ratio CH2O/ROH determines the formation of BCME. Various aromatic substrates, in particular polymers, were halomethylated.
