Formerly a little‐recognized sideline, distance and continuing education units have been embraced by universities and elevated their function's stature as a core activity in higher education. Thus, leaders in the distance and continuing education field now have the opportunity to become campus leaders that provide insights on financial, programmatic and pedagogical innovation, according to Gary Matkin in “The Distance Educator's Opportunity for Institutional Leadership,” published in the Continuing Higher Education Review.
