Mode control in microstrip patch antennas using ground-plane perforations

In this paper, the effects of ground‐plane perforations on the mode excitation of microstrip patch antennas are investigated. The perforations used consist of a single hole, multiple holes, and slots etched in the ground plane of patch antennas. We show that in narrowband patch antennas, ground‐plan...

Zusammenfassung:In this paper, the effects of ground‐plane perforations on the mode excitation of microstrip patch antennas are investigated. The perforations used consist of a single hole, multiple holes, and slots etched in the ground plane of patch antennas. We show that in narrowband patch antennas, ground‐plane perforations create a shift in the resonant frequency of certain modes, and that in wideband antennas they increase the −10‐dB bandwidth. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
