Zusammenfassung: | A new procedure for the separation of the rare earth elements (R) by ion‐exchange has been established. A single column with the resin in a copper + ammonium (+hydrogen) form and containing adsorbed formic acid (for the separation of the yttrium group) or acetic acid (for the cerium group) is used. The rare earths are loaded on the column as solutions of their complex ethylenediamine‐tetra‐acetate (EDTA) salts. A 0,2 M solution of (NH4)2Mg‐EDTA is used as eluant. The weak acid adsorbed on the ion‐exchange resin provides a sufficient low acidity to ensure a good separation. The precipitation of slightly soluble H4‐EDTA, H[R‐EDTA],6H2O or H2Mg‐EDTA, 6H2O during the elution is prevented by buffering the eluant with ammonium formate or acetate. Rare earth concentrations as high as 0,6 equiv./l are obtained in the eluate. |
