Front Cover: Investigation of Malonic Acid in Superacidic Solutions (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 9/2019)

The Front Cover shows the monoprotonated malonic acid observed in the single‐crystal structure analysis of [HOOCCH2C(OH)2][AsF6]. The protonation of malonic acid was achieved in the superacidic systems HF/AsF5 and HF/SbF5, representing an example of an acidic proton embedded in a six‐membered ring‐like structure containing an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The crystal structure of the monoprotonated as well as diprotonated malonic acid is discussed together with vibrational spectra and quantum chemical calculations.
