Nanostructured Metal Oxide Clusters by Oxidation of Stabilized Metal Clusters with Air

Complete oxidation without formation of bulk CoO results when cobalt clusters stabilized with R4N+X− are exposed to O2. Zusammenfassung:Complete oxidation without formation of bulk CoO results when cobalt clusters stabilized with R4N+X− are exposed to O2. Since the resulting soluble, nanostructured cobalt(II) oxide clusters (idealized representation below: dark spheres: metal atoms; light spheres: oxygen atoms; R  C8H1−) do not penetrate very far into the pores of Al2O3 pellets, unlike the Co clusters, these materials are potential shell catalysts.
