Ba[Si(OCH 2 CH 2 O) 3 ], a Hexaalkoxysilicate Synthesized from SiO 2

The reaction of BaO, SiO 2 , and an excess of ethylene glycol provides [Ba‐Si(OCH 2 CH 2 O) 3 ] · 3.25 HO(CH 2 ) 2 OH, the first amazingly stable hexaalkylsilicate, in 90% yield. This complex was characterized by X‐ray crystallography. The reactions with MgO and CaO give analogous compounds; with al...

Zusammenfassung:The reaction of BaO, SiO 2 , and an excess of ethylene glycol provides [Ba‐Si(OCH 2 CH 2 O) 3 ] · 3.25 HO(CH 2 ) 2 OH, the first amazingly stable hexaalkylsilicate, in 90% yield. This complex was characterized by X‐ray crystallography. The reactions with MgO and CaO give analogous compounds; with alkali metal oxides pentacoordinate silicates are formed.
