Mesogenic calixarenes

A novel class of mesogens consists of the calix[n]arenes (see Figure). In addition to forming interesting host‐guest complexes—which offer the possibility of investigations into mesomorphic stability connected with host‐guest complexation—these molecules may be used as the central core of cloumnar mesogens. Different ways of obtaining macroscopic ferroelectric stacking are also briefly considered.
