The Massacres of the Hamidian Period (I): Global Narratives and Local Approaches

The extreme violence that targeted Armenians at the end of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II between 1894 and 1897 left innumerable traces in memory throughout the 20th century and up to the present day. They mark an important moment in the history of humanitarian action and reflection. Whole segments of the history of this violence have yet to be written. Long perceived in teleological terms as a set of paroxysmal events heralding the genocide, as a “dress rehearsal”, the violence perpetrated against Ottoman Armenians between 1894 and 1897 has not given rise to substantive research before the last years. It has remained in the shadow of the research devoted to the genocide. This theme issue aims to show the current state of research. At the heart of it is the question of the precedent: what links can be established between a genocide and the mass crimes that preceded it? — a question that is acute for other genocides in the 20th century. Les violences extrêmes qui ont frappé les Arméniens de la fin de l’Empire ottoman sous le règne du sultan Abdülhamid II, entre 1894 et 1897, ont causé un vif émoi chez leurs contemporains et eu d’importantes répercussions internationales. Pourtant leur histoire reste à écrire. Longtemps perçues de manière téléologique comme un ensemble d’événements paroxystiques annonciateurs du génocide, elles n’ont pas jusque récemment fait l’objet de travaux de fond, restant dans l’ombre de la recherche consacrée au génocide. Ce numéro spécial donne un aperçu sur l’état actuel de ces recherches tout en posant la question du précédent : quels liens est-il possible d’établir entre le génocide et les crimes de masse qui l’ont précédé — une question qui se pose avec acuité pour d’autres génocides au 20e siècle.
