Zusammenfassung:The introduction to this collection of essays celebrating the millenium of the Benedictine Monastery of Saint Maurice at Bakonybel offers an overarching discussion of the invention, the hagiographical tradition and the patrons of the cult of the martyrs of the Theban Legion in Latin Christianity, with particular emphasis on the Burgund King Sigismund’s foundation of an abbey at Saint-Maurice d’Agaune and on Emperor Otto I’s association of Saint Maurice with the conversion of the heathen. In the fifteenth-sixteenth century, the “Burgundian heritage” became doubly important for the imperial sponsors of the cult and of the abbey. The second part of the essay presents the foundation of Saint Maurice Monastery in Bel by Gunther of Niederaltaich and King Stephen of Hungary in 1018 and follows up the historia domus up to its present refoundation and renewal.
