Zusammenfassung: | Plato's Apology of Socrates is undoubtedly one of the most important sources ofknowledge about Socrates and his teachings. Recent studies of the existing documents on thelife of the philosopher show that Apology of Socrates should be considered a credible sourcetext11. Plato's account of his teacher's trial not only provides valuable information about whathappened in 399 BC, describing the charges against Socrates and the arguments he used in hisdefence, but also allows to accurately recreate the essence of Socratic teaching and his uniquephilosophical method, i.e. the often quoted and widely researched Socratic method ofquestioning and dialogue. What seems equally important is that when the philosopher is facinga guilty verdict and his own imminent death, he speaks about matters he cares the most. The aimof this article is to define the meaning and purpose of Socratic philosophical mission witha special focus on his precept that one must care about oneself. |
