Ukraina – narodziny społeczeństwa obywatelskiego

There is no way to predict the development of the situation in Ukraine in the near future. It is not inconceivable that we will witness tragedy and the suppression of EuroMaidan. Without far-reaching reforms, the economic and demographic situation condemns the country to instability. The Maidan social movement and its demands may prove to be lasting and durable, as once were the ideas of the Polish Solidarity movement, which were sustained despite martial law. The events in Ukraine should also be seen as a nation-building process and in its own context. It is almost unbelievable that it can be stopped, even by harsh repression, when taking into account that it wasn’t halted previously given the terrible Stalinist terror. The originality of the present situation is that it has created not only a nationally conscious society in the sense used in the 19th century but also a modern civil society.
